Vectors and Scalars

Vectors and Scalars

Physics is mostly a mathematical science. Real events are described by gathering data, plotting graphs, deriving equations and then using the equations to predict and analyze more events.

As a mathematical science, the strict definition of terms becomes critical to proper analysis of observed events.

Two such terms that define significant differences between similar events are vectors and scalars. For starters, just remember that a scalar quantity is one that can be fully described by knowing only the magnitude or size of the quantity. Vectors are those which need both magnitude AND direction to fully describe the quantity.

The following two videos will give a good overview of the two concepts.

Introduction to vectors and scalars: Distance, displacement, speed and velocity. Difference between vectors and scalars

As we study various concepts, one memory thing that should always occur is to learn the vector or scalar nature of the concept.
